A gentle family tale of discovery, painting, rainbows and sign language – based on a true story!
What to do on a rainy day? Why not learn some signs? How about the signs for colours?
Jack, Caitlin and Mummy set out to find the most colourful things in their house and garden, learning the sign for each colour as they go along. Mummy is also collecting bottles of paint, one of each colour as they get ready to create the most wonderful picture. What could possibly go wrong?
Jack Signs Colours! is a beautiful addition to the Jack Signs! series of books, each designed to support the learning of sign language through fun and relatable stories for young children. The books provide “mirrors and windows” into the life of Jack, a little boy who is deaf and wears hearing aids, his typically-hearing sister Caitlin and their ever-resourceful mother.
Jack Signs Colours! integrates “sign along with me” icons, which prompt children (plus their parents and teachers) to sign along with Jack as they read the story. If they come across new vocabulary, they can hop online here to learn the sign from the video resources available below, and to watch the whole story signed in both BSL (British Sign Language) and ASL (American Sign Language).

Inspirational stories of deaf children listening and speaking, told by their families
Through these personal accounts, thirteen families share their journeys as their deaf children learned to listen and speak. Each story is different, reflecting the diversity of deafness and the families’ different cultures, hopes and dreams for their children. They describe what it was like at the start, when they did not know what the future held for their children or what might be possible, and how far they have come since those fraught early days.
As a resource for newly diagnosed families, and the professionals who support them, this book is both inspiring and reassuring, whilst being open and frank about the challenges faced along the way

Based on a true story, Jack Signs! is the heart-warming story of a little boy who is deaf, his typically hearing sister and their Mum. These are toys and toys are meant to be played with and so they will inevitably get dirty. Using a soft, damp cloth, you can easily dab and wipe down the toys. Please do not use any cleaning agents on them.
Kids love water and they love to dunk all their toys in water even more. The toys are not intended for water play but if they happen to go for a bit of a swim it shouldn’t harm them. After rescuing the toys from their swim, simply place them in the sun for a few hours and they should be just fine.
Although wood is a hard material, the toys are not indestructible. If the toys happen to take a hard knock and accidentally break, a little wood glue should be able to do the trick.
We do recommend that you oil the toys from time to time to help with the natural wear and tear that occurs. You can use any food grade or natural oil; cutting board oil or beeswax.
The puzzles are a lot more fragile than the toys, so it is recommended not to get them wet or drop them. They do not need to be oiled and if they need a cleaning, you can wipe them with an alcohol free baby wipe or wet wipe and follow immediately with a dry cloth.
