Parents Need Other Parents: Reflections from Cochlear Implant Family Day

“The CI Family Day highlighted something so important – parents need other parents. The future lies in parent to parent support, built on understanding, shared experience, and connection.” — Alecia & Bianka

Our first family event took the form of a Cochlear Implant Family Day, and what stayed with us long after the day ended was not just the conversations, but the feeling in the room. A feeling of being understood. Of being seen. Of not having to explain or justify the emotions that come with raising a child on a hearing journey. When parents come together in this space, there is a quiet, shared understanding. One built from waiting rooms, big decisions, long days, small wins, and moments that feel overwhelming and hopeful all at once. There is comfort in being surrounded by people who simply get it.

More Than a Medical Journey

So much of the hearing journey is understandably centred around the clinical side — diagnosis, devices, surgery, switch-on, and therapy plans. These are important and necessary parts of the process. But what is often less visible is the emotional experience of parents. The uncertainty. The responsibility. The constant wondering if you’re doing enough or making the right choices. Cochlear Implant Family Day created space for that part of the journey too. It reminded us that while professional guidance is essential, there is something deeply powerful about parent-to-parent support — about hearing from someone who has walked a similar road and lived through the same questions and fears.

The Power of Parent-to-Parent Support

Parent-to-parent support doesn’t replace professional care — it complements it in a way that only lived experience can. It looks like honest conversations instead of polished answers.

It sounds like reassurance without judgement. It feels like relief when you realise you’re not the only one finding certain parts hard. At Family Day, we watched parents relax as they shared their stories. We saw how powerful it was for families to hear, “We struggled with that too,” or “That part took time for us.” In those moments, connection was formed — and with it, confidence and hope.

Growing an Inclusive Vision

Our first event focused on cochlear implants because cochlear implants are the journey our own boys have walked and the experience we know from lived reality. It is from this place of understanding that our support began.

As we move forward, our vision is broader and more inclusive. We want to create space for all of our little Hearo’s who are on a hearing journey — whether that includes cochlear implants, hearing aids, BAHA’s, a combination of these, unilateral or bilateral hearing loss, or journeys that do not include devices at all. Some families choose spoken language. Some families choose sign language. Many families use a combination of both. There is no right or wrong way. There is only what is best for each child and their family, and every journey deserves to be respected, supported, and understood.

The Way Forward

Cochlear Implant Family Day reaffirmed something we feel deeply — the future of support in the hearing loss space lies in connection. In parents supporting parents. In sharing lived experience openly and honestly, without comparison or pressure. When parents feel supported, children benefit. Families feel steadier. Decisions feel less frightening. The journey feels more manageable when it is shared. We don’t need to have all the answers. What we need is community — a place where parents can walk alongside one another, exactly where they are. That is the way forward. And together, we move ahead with understanding, shared experience, and connection.
